O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing
Author: Charles Wesley, 1739, ALT.
O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace.
Notes on Verse 1: May we have the same heart of asking for a thousand tongues to sing praises to our Great Redeemer. May we sing the glories of our God and King. Think about how much God's grace has triumphed over the sins and issues of our lives. Oh, if only we sang praises continually with even the one tongue we have been given.
My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad,
The honors of Thy name.
Notes on Verse 2: How gracious is our Master and our God. He is Master and He is God. May we lean on Him to assist us in proclaiming His name. May His name be spread through all of the earth everywhere. May His name be lifted up and honored among all peoples.
Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
'Tis music in the sinner's ears,
'Tis life and health and peace.
Notes on Verse 3: It is Jesus who calms our fears. It is only He who has the power to bring comfort and have our sorrows to cease. It is the name of Jesus that is music to the sinner's ears, bringing salvation. His name bring life and health and peace.
He breaks the power of reigning sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean;
His blood availed for me.
Notes on Verse 4: It is Jesus that breaks the power of sin, in that it no longer reigns in our lives. He has set free the prisoner. It is only His blood that can make the foulest clean, no matter how "bad" you have been. His blood is available for us all.
He speaks and, list'ning to His voice,
New life the dead receive;
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice;
The humble poor believe.
Notes on Verse 5: He speaks and those who listen receive new life. Those who are broken and mournful can rejoice. It is the humble who believe.
Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ,
Ye blind, behold your Savior come;
And leap, ye lame, for joy.
Notes on verse 6: It is through Christ the deaf can hear, the dumb shall praise, the blind shall see and the lame shall leap. A deaf can still hear God's Words in the their heart. The dumb can still lift up praise with the heart. The blind can see and understand the things of God. The lame can leap with praise within. One day they will all physically be set free to praise forever if they have done so on earth with their hearts.
Glory to God and praise and love
Be ever, ever giv'n
By saints below and saints above -
The church in earth and heav'n.
Notes on verse 7: Glory to God. Sing praises to God. Give your love to God. Always be giving glory, singing praises and giving love to God. All the saints on earth & all the saints above are all one body giving praise to our Wonderful God.
