Our pastor has moved from teaching in Titus for this year, but will be picking it up again next year. Yesterday's sermon was good. I took good notes, so I thought I would post it.
He read Matthew One:
I. The Order of His birth
Matthew 1:17
"So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations."
A. Plan - the plan of God in order of what is carried out
B. Promise - Every time something is carried out, there is a promise associated with it
C. Purpose - His Name lifted up through people
***Plan is made and a promise is given & carried out for a purpose***
II. The Nature of His Birth
Matthew 1:18
"Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit."
Every Jewish woman wanted to be Mary - they wanted to be part of His plan in bearing children.
A. Miraculous - only time birth such as this has happened - Holy Spirit birth
B. Gracious - In the royal line hardly any of them finished well
***Tamar and Rahab used as examples***
***Grace of God always accomplishes purpose***
***There are no hopeless cases. Grace covers them all***
III. The Necessity of His Birth
Matthew 1:22-23
"So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, 'Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,' which is translated, 'God with us.'"
A. Redemption - someone had to pay for sins God has passed over - we needed hope
B. Helpless Race - Needed because unfaithfulness of people - no one outside of God Himself could deliver us
IV. The Significance of His Birth
Matthew 1:23
***He didn't leave us hopeless for all eternity***
***He dwelt among us***
A. Fulfillment - fulfills every gap & every promise
***Significance is to dwell among us & save us from our sin
B. Prophetic - About Him, through Him, & by Him it was done
C. Presence - Priest, Prophet, King
***Legal right as King through geneology of Joseph***Although Mary's geneology is all Jesus had in human terms***
Luke give geneology of Mary
